In today’s world, small and midsize businesses (SMBs) are rapidly venturing into global markets. Indeed, ecommerce platforms, communication tools, access to financial resources, and remote work facilitate global trade. However, expansion comes with a unique set of challenges, like communication across culture. This is where language translation services, particularly localization, are key.

Studies show that businesses are operating outside their borders, with roughly 80% recognizing the strategic importance of global expansion to continue growing. In general, this percentage has steadily increased by 15% over the last decade.

That said, communicating across cultures and languages presents inherent challenges. Recent data suggests that 75% of consumers prefer purchasing products in their native language. What’s more, ignoring this preference can result in a loss of potential customers.  Tailored localized content is essential.

Localization doesn’t just improve customer engagement and satisfaction. It’s also the first step in establishing a connection with them. Businesses that invest in localization experience a 25% increase in customer satisfaction. In addition, localized content can result in a 20% rise in customer retention. By speaking the language of their consumers, companies create a connection that transcends linguistic barriers and consequently, encourages loyalty and brand affinity.

Furthermore, localization trends vary across industries. For example, in healthcare, the demand for accurate medical translations went up by 30% last year. Healthcare providers that go for the cheapest translation available open themselves up to risk. Articles and stories abound about how poor quality translations can lead to adverse events, sometimes serious. Law firms that don’t offer document translation and interpretation for discovery and depositions stand to lose opportunities to larger firms that offer translations as part of their services.

Language Service Providers (LSPs) play a pivotal role in seamless communication. By reducing translation turnaround times by 40%, LSPs thus enable businesses to adapt swiftly to market demands, ensuring quick delivery, consistent quality, and reliable language solutions.

In the dynamic global business landscape, the impact of localization can’t be overstated. While investing in language translation services, with a specific focus on localization, companies are not merely making a strategic choice— they’re increasing their ability to thrive in the competitive global marketplace.

Rapidly evolving technologies have had a tremendous impact on myriad industries, and the translation industry is no different. For example, machine translation (MT) has gained increasing popularity over the years and for numerous applications. What are the pros and cons of machine translation, and when does it come in handy?

What is machine translation?

Machine translation (MT) is a term that refers to the process of using artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically translate content from one source language (say, English) to a target language (like French). This takes place without human input.

There has been an ongoing debate over whether MT and AI can replace humans and put scores of translators out of work.  Although machine translation is a tool that significantly streamlines communication and helps to translate texts efficiently and at scale, it definitely has disadvantages that raise controversy and concern among customers who hear that their translation agencies may use this option on their content.

Machine translation — pros and cons

Many specialists in the field debate whether MT should be applied in their daily workflow. Let’s analyze some major pros and cons of the technology and decide if computers can in fact replace human professionals entirely. Spoiler alert: the short answer is no.

Pros of machine translation:

  • Machine translation is highly effective when it comes to lower tier texts. By that we mean that it’s good for documents that don’t require significant precision, and where localization isn’t needed. In this scenario, MT makes it possible to achieve satisfactory translation quality within seconds. MT is also effective at processing large volumes of content, where the reader is merely looking to understand the general meaning, or gist, of what’s written.
  • MT facilitates interpersonal communication – translation is supposed to help people communicate with each other. It’s natural that different circumstances require different approaches. If someone wants a general understanding of an email written in a foreign language, machine translation is enough for this purpose (depending on the importance or sensitivity of the content). MT applications provide the underpinning for real-time translation (RTT) tools.
  • Machine translation is cost-efficient. Advances in MT that rely on statistical and neural MT significantly reduce the cost of the translation process through greater automation, contextual language processing, and continuous learning. These methods lead to greater efficiencies and help to lower cost. The absence of translation or editing functions performed by humans also contributes to lower price points.
  • MT quality is constantly improving. Continuous training of MT engines is resulting in higher quality returns that are improving all the time. Some MT technologies are even able to correctly translate metaphorical expressions like idioms or proverbs. MT has become so high-performing that engines are able to effectively handle even more specialized document corpora in verticals like legal and fintech.

Cons of machine translation

  • MT can be inaccurate – if you outsource a translation project to professionals, they translate it even if some phrases in the source language are grammatically or stylistically incorrect. MT engines on the other hand, haven’t mastered nuances like contextual phrasing or sentiment analysis, and will only deliver higher quality output if the source content is structured in a way known to AI systems.
  • Machine translation isn’t suitable for all types of texts. Although MT works great with technical documents or instructions, it’s not so effective when cultural elements, complex and specialized terminology, slang or literary language come into play.
  • The quality of MT is determined by the language pair. It’s worth noting that machine translation enables obtaining satisfactory results only in certain language combinations. Generally, it works best when translating English and European languages. The quality of MT can be lower when compared to Japanese, Korean, and Chinese translations.

Benefits of machine translation – the takeaway

Machine translation has huge potential, as it provides affordable and instant access to resources necessary for effective international communication. However, MT also has enough disadvantages that it’s not ready to be fully let off the leash. The downsides are substantial enough that human expertise and a post–edit phase by human translations is still the way to go to maintain both quality and subtle nuances associated with the written word. AI solutions are clearly facilitating the work of human translations, however its place is still limited to offering a complement to the human translation process.

The healthcare industry is a demanding field where quality translation can’t be overemphasized. If you are looking for an effective way to expand your language access and increase patient satisfaction, read our entry to discover useful criteria and standards that will bring value to your healthcare QMS system. Learn about best practices in medical translation!

Three tips for healthcare translations

The choice of a healthcare translation service provider affects not only patients and their satisfaction, but also the entire healthcare organization. After all, translation enables obtaining vital information about a patient’s condition, concerns and ailments.

Effective communication is essential to provide patients with the help they need. Moreover, quality translation streamlines the operation of the entire health institution.

Below, you can see a list of three best practices for healthcare translations:

Centralization

Healthcare translation can’t be effective without centralization. When choosing a translation agency to cooperate with, pay attention to its work scheme, the number of specialists involved in the process (research, translation, localization, proofreading), and make sure that your documents will be tackled by a translator with expertise in the field.

Outsourcing the translation process to an external company is beneficial for your healthcare business, as language service providers have a profound understanding of multiple languages, disciplines and jargons. Thanks to it, they cooperate with each other to deliver high-quality end-products.

Consistency

Everybody who works at a sizable healthcare institution knows that consistency is the key quality standard. When looking for a translation company, verify whether your potential candidates for cooperation benefit from tools that help to manage consistency. These may be:

  • Translation memories – they store content and enable reusing terms that appear frequently. In the long-run, choosing services of a company that benefits from such tools can reduce translation costs.
  • Glossaries – it’s important to note that different organizations may prefer different vocabulary and expressions. A quality translation agency should be interested in your requirements, style guides or glossaries. This is the only way to deliver consistent translations.

Health literacy

Not every patient is familiar with medical terminology. For this reason, it’s crucial to ensure that the selected translation agency is flexible and takes into account the health literacy of the document’s recipients. Both patients and specialists should be able to easily comprehend the translated text.

What are the best practices for medical translations?

The healthcare industry is a sector where teamwork and constant refinements are of utmost importance. Numerous organizations benefit from the so-called Quality Management Software that effectively streamlines the operation of the institution and identifies areas for improvement.

QMSes help to manage documents, complaints, inspections, supplies, electronic signatures, reports or even validations. Nowadays, when the security of patient data is vital for most healthcare institutions, proper documentation and confidentiality are one of the key factors that should be taken into account when searching for an LSP.

If you look for a healthcare translation agency, make sure that its services can improve your patients’ well-being. Choosing companies that protect sensitive data instills confidence in your organization.

The best practices for healthcare translations – the takeaway

Quality healthcare translations should comply with the regulations and standards of the healthcare institution. Professional LSPs are able to support your QMS by streamlining communication and preventing potential mistakes caused by miscommunication.

Legal translations are demanding fields that require specialized knowledge and understanding of source and target languages, different cultures, and legal systems. Wondering how to select the best legal translation service provider?

How to choose a legal translation company? Five tips to follow

If you are looking for professional translation services for law firms, pay attention to the elements listed below:

Select experts who specialize in legal translation

Knowledge of source and target languages isn’t enough to provide high quality legal translation services. When consulting translation service providers for law firms, make sure they employ qualified linguists with years of experience in translation legal documents such as depositions, contracts and agreements, warranties, data privacy information, and other relevant materials. Be sure they have a firm grasp of how legal systems work in the countries in which they are translating the target language. In many cases, it is essential that their working knowledge of compliance and regulations be up to date.

Analyze company reviews and assess communication skills

Sometimes marketing-speak found on translation agencies’ official websites doesn’t have a lot in common with the actual level of service clients can expect from the company. Before signing any contracts or commissioning the translation process, read reviews and testimonials if available. It’s always preferable to contact the agency to ask about translation for law firms to see whether they’re familiar with the kinds of documents that typically require translation, and your internal processes and stakeholders within the firm. See what kind of questions they ask and what they’ll need to get started on translations. Make sure their attention to quality aligns with your expectations.

Check translation certifications

Many people tend to overrate their skills and possibilities. When a specific translation agency attracts your attention, make sure that it offers reliable evidence proving its qualifications. It’s worth mentioning that in the case of legal documents, courts and official institutions often accept only certified translations, which means that a person who does them has to pass a special exam to get proper certifications. If you are looking for a trustworthy company, check official associations that unite translation agencies meeting specific standards.

Verify the knowledge of the legal systems

A legal translator is a person who needs to be well-versed in legal systems and regulations effective in the source and target languages. Legalese and jargon are different around the world, and word-for-word translation isn’t always correct. Make sure that the selected legal translation service provider has the knowledge of relevant regulations and laws.

Voice your expectations

It’s not a secret that a quality translation agency should tailor its offer and services to your expectations. Official documents frequently include various elements that don’t need to be translated. Make sure that you find common ground with the agency to avoid unnecessary expenditures.

Translation for law firms – the takeaway

Legal translation is a complex field that requires profound understanding of the source and target languages, their legal systems and jargon. Choosing a quality language service provider guarantees that your requirements will be met.

Some people still wonder what legal translation is all about – much like legalese, it’s all Greek to them! Want to know more? Keep reading today’s entry to discover the different types of legal translation and learn what kind of language is used in such projects.

What is legal translation?

Legal document translation is a field of translation used in legal settings and for legal purposes. It comes in handy when regulating legal relationships, signing international contracts, or translating documents from the source language to the target language.

Professional legal translation services are required whenever you have to translate official documents like birth and marriage certificates, notarial deeds, death certificates, contracts, financial statements or other important documents with sensitive data.

Main types of legal translation

It’s possible to distinguish six different types of legal translation and documents that are typically translated:

  • Litigation – frequently, clients of translation agencies need access to case results and documents in another language that are used for discovery, such as interviews, depositions, written communications, internal emails, and so forth. A professionally prepared translation helps to understand the situation better.
  • Legislation – legal systems vary from country to country. Prepared laws and legislations that come into force require accurate legal translation and localization services.
  • Regulation – it’s defined as rules set by governments or other authorities in order to control how something is done or how people behave. Legal regulation translation comes in handy if you plan to go global. With quality translation services, you’ll be able to regulate your company’s operation and ensure that it’s compliant with the binding rules in the target country.
  • Patents– these are official documents that give you the right to be the only entity allowed to sell or manufacture a given product for a specific period of time. To make your patents recognized internationally, you need to have them translated by professional legal agencies.
  • Corporate – this type of legal translation comes in handy when signing international contracts or entering into a cooperation with foreign companies or employees. Quality legal translation keeps everyone on the same page and prevents misunderstandings.
  • Financial – financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements are only some of the financial documents that require legal translation.

Inaccurate legal translation can have a catastrophic impact on the outcome of any case. Choosing poor quality services may have financial, reputational or even criminal repercussions. By selecting a professional translation agency, law firms can avoid potential disagreements and penalties. It’s worth investing in specialist services to ensure that your documentation is organized and translated properly.

What type of language is used in legal translation?

Legal translation is a complex and demanding translation type which requires a professional approach and impressive experience. Legal documents are known for being extremely difficult to comprehend. Their translation is largely based on official, specialist legalese and jargon that can’t be learned overnight. Depending on the type of legal documents, the language can be technical and include complex vocabulary that requires the knowledge of Latin and French legal terminology.

Different types of legal translation – the takeaway

When choosing a legal translation company to cooperate with, make sure that selected experts are skilled and experienced specialists able to comprehend the source and target languages, their legal systems, cultures and regulations.

The process of choosing the right translation agency to work with can be pretty challenging and overwhelming. Especially if you don’t have experience in the field. What to look for in a translation company to ensure that its services will satisfy your needs? Check out our tips on how to choose translation agency!

How to choose a translation company? Three vital criteria

Each and every translation company advocates slightly different methods and strategies. So it’s hard to devise one universal list of features that could help you make an informed decision.

However, there are a few basic criteria you can take into account to maximize your chances of choosing the most reliable translation service provider.

Flexibility of the translation agency

What to look for in a translation company? After communicating your requirements, a quality language service provider should tailor the process to how and where the translated text will be used, in addition to the client’s projected budget.

For example, if your product includes a large technical reference manual for highly specialized staff, consisting of hundreds of thousands of words, your customers will probably only need a translation to grasp the general meaning of instructions (particularly if there are many illustrations). In this case, it’s not necessary to use a translator who specializes in consumer-facing content to labor over every word and have an editor proofread the text three times.

How to choose translation company

Size of your business

Wondering how this criterion can help you choose the right translation agency? Well, just think about the entire LSP industry. It’s full of both smaller and more sizable companies. Mature, experienced clients frequently select services offered by large corporate translation agencies.

On the other hand, companies taking their first steps in the market will probably search for smaller agencies that will cater to their needs. Therefore, if you run a relatively small business with an eye toward eventual global expansion , look for a translation company that is willing to work with you as you grow your business, that specializes in a specific field, and won’t consider your inquiry as unprofitable. Smaller companies will frequently see their deadlines pushed out or receive less attention.

Stages of the translation process

Translation is a multi-faceted process that requires the knowledge of both source and target languages, localization, and proofreading skills as well as relevant cultural insights. Without all these elements, it’s impossible to create texts of satisfactory quality.

When doing initial research and determining translation companies’ core strengths and competencies, make sure that you ask questions to help you:

  • Estimate the number of stages of the translation process,
  • Estimate translation costs,
  • Learn whether the translation agency offers additional services like proofreading, localization, desktop publishing (DTP) or consulting,
  • Discover who will be primarily responsible for the project and his/her expertise.

What to look for in a translation company? The takeaway

If you’re looking for an answer to the question on how to choose a translation agency, you need to know that there is no one right solution. What can you do to make a decision that will meet your requirements? Analyze elements such as your budget, the purpose of the translation, as well as potential frequency of cooperation with the LSP. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. They can help you gain a valuable insight into how the agency functions. And the type of performance you can expect.

Machine translation (MT) and artificial intelligence (AI) have significantly facilitated interpersonal communication. Thanks to them, translation is becoming quicker and more efficient. Furthermore, people from all over the world are able to effectively communicate with each other, even if they speak only in their native language.

AI and MT – what’s the difference?

Many people who aren’t part of the translation world wonder what the difference is between artificial intelligence and machine translation. Are they the same? Or is AI an improved version of MT?

Machine translation is defined as the process during which we benefit from AI to automatically translate source language content into target language content. All this happens without any human action. Machine translation considers individual words, with no  focus on hidden meanings or relationships between elements.

On the other hand, artificial intelligence relates to a branch of computer science that develops smart machines that perform tasks typically done by humans. AI translators are complex tools that benefit from AI to translate spoken or written words and their actual meanings. This form is more accurate and helps to avoid many misunderstandings.

Interestingly, AI can be divided into types such as:

  • reactive machines – they follow only basic principles and aren’t able to store memory. They are ideal for repetitive tasks,
  • limited memory – it’s able to store historical data and gather information that can potentially affect upcoming events. It’s more complex and offers greater possibilities,
  • theory of mind – based on this concept, AI is supposed to analyze thoughts and emotions of other people in order to benefit from them and make relevant decisions.

Therefore, although machine translation benefits from artificial intelligence, these two terms aren’t interchangeable.

How is AI making translation faster?

Due to the fact that artificial intelligence significantly facilitates the translation process, many customers believe that they don’t actually need specialist support. Is it true? How is AI making translation more efficient?

Speed

When using AI translation, you get the results right away. Hundreds or even thousands of words are translated almost immediately, which makes it possible to grasp the meaning of the message and helps to save a lot of time. Thanks to this process, customers receive translations faster.

Endless range of languages

A typical person speaks only one, two, or maximally three languages. However, with the help of AI translation, you can quickly translate texts from virtually any language in the world. Thanks to the general meaning obtained from the machine, translators save a lot of time so that they’re able to focus on post-editing.

Costs

Because AI significantly facilitates and shortens the translation process, specialists are able to deliver texts quicker, and at more affordable prices tailored to expectations and budgets of customers.

Machine translation at Acculing

Specialists at Acculing realize that AI and MT significantly facilitate the process of translating technical documentation and well-structured texts, whereas marketing, literary and customer-oriented content requires more human activity, proofreading, post-editing and localization

We do our best to meet expectations of customers and tailor our strategies to their needs. Acculing offers a wide range of services that can be selected or combined based on your budget and requirements.

Over the centuries, many translation specialists have wondered whether it is possible to produce a faithful and linguistically correct translation. To ensure satisfactory quality and accuracy of translated works, they benefit from various strategies and methods. Adaptation is one of them. What is it, and what’s the difference between translation and adaptation?

Translation and adaptation – what are they?

To discuss discrepancies between translation and adaptation, first we need to define them.

Peter Newmark, one of the most prominent professors of translation studies, stated that translation is about “rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended the text”. According to this approach, the translation process focuses on the exact information provided in the source text and renders it into the target language.

On the other hand, adaptation is a translation method that focuses on altering the source text so that it corresponds to the culture, style, grammar, semantics and syntax of the target language. This approach may not produce completely accurate translations, however, thanks to it readers feel that they are original recipients of the text.

Interestingly, we can distinguish various types of adaptation:

  • collocation adaptation – in many cases, literal translation causes misconceptions and numerous linguistic mistakes. This is particularly applicable if SL (source language) and TL (target language) belong to different language families and differ in terms of collocations.
  • cultural adaptation – a professional translator is a bridge between the source and target languages and their cultures. Cultural adaptation is the key to ensuring that the translated text serves its intended purpose and is understood by the target audience.
  • local adaptation – a method of solving translation problems encountered in individual segments of the source text. Local adaptation is still faithful to the source text and tailorsa situations depicted in it to the environment of the target culture.

What is the difference between adaptation and translation?

The main discrepancy between adaptation and translation is the degree to which the source text is rendered into the target language.

While translation is simply about transferring content literally from the SL to the TL, adaptation is a creative translation method that makes the text culturally appropriate, accurate and understandable.

Adaptation vs. localization – are they the same?

If you read our last article devoted to localization (What Is Localization?), you may wonder whether it actually differs from adaptation.

Although localization is about changing individual elements such as dates, weights, addresses or currencies so that they match the target market, it doesn’t guarantee that the content will be fully functional and meaningful for the target audience.

In order for this to happen, you need adaptation. Thanks to appropriate means such as addition, deletion or omission, the text becomes understandable for the target culture.

Continuous development of artificial intelligence and machine translation make many customers and translation specialists wonder if AI will replace human translators. However, to answer this question we first need to analyze what AI translation is.

What is MT and AI?

It turns out that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine translation (MT) aren’t the same thing.

Artificial intelligence denotes a complex branch of computer science that develops and utilizes smart machines which are able to perform tasks that used to be done by humans. It’s worth mentioning that AI translators are advanced tools that take advantage of AI to recognize speech or translate spoken and written language. Contrary to machine translators, this form is more precise, as it helps to avoid numerous misunderstandings, analyzes actual meanings of words, and takes into account relationships between them.

On the other hand, machine translation is the process that benefits from artificial intelligence in order to automate translation and render a source language message into a target language message without any human activity. MT takes into account individual words and doesn’t analyze their hidden meanings or relationships. It’s ideal for technical documentation and thoroughly structured texts, however, it’s not particularly accurate when dealing with marketing, literary and culture-specific content.

Benefits of AI translation

AI translation significantly facilitates the translation process and makes it more efficient. Its main advantages include:

  • accessibility – most people have access to the Internet and various MT or AI tools. Thanks to these technologies, people can quickly and effectively communicate with each other even if they speak only one language.
  • speed – AI translators need only a few seconds to translate even a few hundreds of words. As a result, both translators and regular speakers save lots of time they would normally spend checking dictionaries or consulting other linguistic resources.
  • cost-effectiveness – AI and MT tools noticeably reduce the costs of translation and the time needed to prepare, proofread, and post-edit documents.

Taking all these benefits into consideration, one may wonder whether AI is likely to replace human translators.

Will AI replace translators?

Although artificial intelligence notably facilitates the translation process and makes it more efficient by saving the time of both linguists and customers, it’s worth noting that it can’t completely replace human translators, their expertise and valuable insights.

Machine and artificial intelligence translation makes it possible to grasp the general meaning of the source text, however, it’s not able to correctly localize it, render more complex or specific terms, and adapt the message to target audiences, their culture and concept of the world.

This can be done solely by a professional translator with deep knowledge of both source and target languages, target audiences, and cultures. Otherwise, the translation and its inaccuracy may cause misunderstandings.

Although many people believe that translation means taking words from one language and expressing them in another, there’s a lot more to it. Depending on the content, consider the myriad differences in culture, manner of speech, and the law before translating your materials. What are the differences between translation procedures and methods, and how to streamline the process using the best translation methods?

What is a translation method?

According to Peter Newmark, translation methods refer to activities on an entire document. On the other hand, translation procedures apply to smaller units such as sentences. Choosing the appropriate method facilitates the translation process so that content conveys the right meaning in the target culture appropriately. At Acculing, we understand that different circumstances require different translations, and so we tailor our strategies and methods accordingly.

What are the best translation methods?

1. Word-for-word translation

Linguists translate individual words according to their most literal meaning with little or no consideration of context. Because word-for-word doesn’t take into account grammatical, semantic or cultural differences between languages, the original word order remains as is. Typically, word-for-word translation does not render quality translations (think machine translation), although the reader should note that word-for-word works well on documents like medical research reports.

2. Literal translation

When it comes to literal translation, linguists translate grammatical structures of source text into close equivalents in the target language. In this case, words are translated without paying attention to connotations between them. Contrary to the word-for-word method, literal translation focuses on context and strives to find metaphorical equivalents in the target language.

3. Communicative translation

Reflecting the exact contextual meaning of the source text into the target language defines communicative translation. Readers receive a fully understandable, acceptable message. Communicative translation takes into account context, culture, grammar, and semantics, thus preferred by many specialists. Although it’s not always the most technically accurate option, it communicates meaning in a natural way and is frequently used when translating text that contains culture-specific idioms, proverbs or word play.

4. Semantic translation

In a semantic translation scenario, one strives to convey the syntactic and semantic structures of the source language in the target language. This method most closely reproduces the original text in a foreign language, while maintaining context and culture. At the same time, semantic translation puts greater emphasis on the aesthetic value of the source text, is more flexible, and gives the translator more freedom for creativity.

5. Adaptation

Adaptation uses modification or even total rewriting of source text language to find equivalents in the target language, while conveying the same message as the original content. Often referred to as transcreation, specialized linguists can assist when presenting messaging or ideas in ways totally different from the source content to the intended public.

Even though various translation methods exist, a quality translation can’t be obtained with any one singular method. Depending on the source and target language, audiences, culture, and semantics, it’s crucial to combine different strategies to create a satisfying translation that will resonate with global audiences everywhere.

At Acculing, we offer comprehensive solutions that incorporate the above mentioned methods to achieve results that meet customer expectations. Depending on your preferences and budget, we will combine elements of  word-for-word, transcreation, and other approaches to achieve results that deliver the best value for your money.
